SALES OF LONG-TERM ACUTE CARE ACCESSORIES AND SERVICE REVENUES TO REACH $94.5 MILLION IN THE U.S. BY 2013
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.-July 8, 2009-According to a new report by Life Science Intelligence (LSI), U.S. Long-Term Acute Care Markets in 2009, revenues from respiratory, dialysis, wound care, and patient monitoring accessories and aftermarket services in long-term acute care are expected to grow from $73.7 million in 2008 to $94.5 million in 2013.
Faced with escalating costs, acute hospitals require alternative care locations to accommodate the needs of extended-stay patients, who account for a substantial proportion of healthcare expenditures. Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) are designed to accommodate the complex needs of these patients. Traditionally, these facilities were designed to wean mechanical ventilation patients. Over time, their role has evolved to include services for patients with complex conditions and comorbidities, including mechanical ventilation and respiratory therapy, wound care, dialysis, and cardiopulmonary monitoring.
Through 2005, the number of long-term acute care facilities in the U.S. grew rapidly, offering an attractive niche for product suppliers. Recent developments in healthcare policy as well as the state of the U.S. economy, however, have challenged growth in the market. The impact of the 25% rule, the Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Expansion Act of 2007, as well as policies targeting payment reductions for short-stay outliers have had a significant impact on the financial health of LTACHs and will limit facility growth in the near future. Until the U.S. economy improves, limited access to credit will continue to restrain capital expenditures. However, the resumption in facility growth after 2010 should drive capital equipment purchases, such as ventilators, dialysis machines, negative pressure wound therapy systems, and patient monitors.
Despite these challenges, sales of accessories and aftermarket services in long-term acute care will continue to rise, driven by growing patient volumes.
This report examines trends in long-term acute care device markets, and provides patient and product forecasts for selected respiratory therapy, wound care, renal failure, and patient monitoring technologies through 2013. Companies covered in this report include: Cardinal Health (CAH), Covidien (COV), Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMS), GE Healthcare (GE), Kinetic Concepts (KCI), and Philips Healthcare (PHG), among others.
